High Altitude Information for Kilimanjaro
Thoughts on Diamox
- side effects of diamox go down with increased dosage
- pills peak one hour after ingestion
- time-release capsules peak six hours after ingestion
- lab-rat tests show that it's difficult to overdose on diamox
- what worked for me may not work for you
I took one 250mg diamox pill in morning and one 250mg pill in evening. Had
to urinate four times during the night, but I felt great at high altitude
with minimal headaches and no AMS. I found diamox worth it for the short
climb duration. In the future, I'll use time-release capsules and take a
pee-bottle along with me because it's cold at night. Sanitation and toilets:
Pre-trip vaccinations: Call the travel clinic for your local hospital for
this info.
You can also get lots of info from "Altitude Illness: Prevention and Treatment"
by Stephen Bezruchka, put out by the Mountaineers and found at REI. Thanks
to Steve Eckert for all his comments during the trip.
